Logan woke up to weight on his chest.
The anvil was a black cat with eyes like candle flames. They were bright yellow with dark red pupils which Logan found hypnotic.
“Where is Brigit?” The being’s voice was raspy.
Logan’s hand, lifting to pet the creature, stopped in mid-air. For a moment, he had forgotten he was in the Perilous. Realizing he had broken one of Brigit’s cardinal rules and let a fae get within reach, he tried to play it cool.
“I don’t know a Brigit.”
The cat narrowed its eyes. Its body was an unmoving stone except for its long black tail whipping angrily back and forth over Logan’s hips.
“Don’t play games with me, human. Her father is going to be here at any moment. It would be to your advantage if you coughed up the truth. Start first with why you are in her bedroom.”
That didn’t sound good on several counts, but Logan was stubbornly loyal, sometimes to the point of foolishness.
“I’m not going to tell you where she is or how to find her.”
The fae beast started taking a bath. Logan, who had grown up with cats, recognized the tactic. It was a self-soothing procedure, giving cats time to consider things.
“She’s truly okay,” Logan sat up as he reassured the being. “But I don’t think I can tell you any more than that. Sorry.”
The cat paused in its licking to give him an assessing stare. Before Logan could say anything further, an opening formed on the wall at the other end of the room. The aperture of swirling shadows swelled until it settled into the form of a gaping hole.
Stepping through the doorway was a powerfully built dark-skinned man. The newcomer was broad as a linebacker in his shoulders and chest. His baldness lent severeness to the angles of his face, enhancing his fierce scowl.
He wore an outfit vaguely reminiscent of the Elizabethan Renaissance. The loose, cotton shirt was under an embroidered wool and leather doublet with intricately slashed sleeves. His hose showed off muscular legs and a leather belt, wrapped twice around his waist, held a scabbard and sword.
His imposing style was assisted by four fae, two women and two men, who stood behind him. They also wore swords.
