NEVADA!

Caroline had to remind herself that her marriage to this man, boor though he might be, would maJce her mistress of a large plantation in Mississippi. It was worth being annoyed a bit in order to make a lifelong dream come true.

Not indicating when he intended to see her again and hot bothering to thank her for the information that she had obtained for him, de Forest walked to the flap, peered out into the night, and vanished with a wave of his hand.

He did not know it, but he was observed. Ted Eannes had been overcome with jealousy for two nights and two days and had refused to accept the word of Toby Holt that he had not visited Caroline in her wagon. All that Eannes saw now was a Union oflScer*s uniform of about the same cut as Tob/s, and he immediately jumped to the conclusion that he indeed was seeing Lieutenant Holt. He was so convinced that he would have been willing to take an oath that the young officer was Toby.

Again he spent a sleepless night, and in the morning he was fatigued, and his brain was muddled. Seething in impotent rage, he stumbled to the cooking fires for breakfast and, as luck would have it, caught a glimspe of Toby off to his left. Through happenstance, Caroline had just emerged from her wagon and had paused on her own way to breakfast as Toby engaged her in conversation.

Seeing the woman he thought he loved chatting intimately with the man he regarded as his rival was more than Ted Eannes could bear. He completely lost control of himself and raced toward the couple, cursing loudly.

A half-dozen other people saw him, stepped out of his path, and stared at him in wonder.

He halted in front of Toby, shouting and gesticulating wildly. Toby was startled, and a swift glance at Caroline told him that she, too, was upset.

Eannes became even more abusive, his curses becoming vicious. Toby might have been able to shrug off the incident had Eannes come to him in private, but the fact that Caroline heard him using language that was not in-
