Chapter Fourteen
Quinn
When we finally got out of bed after the first might of the rest of our lives, and after we had coffee and kissed a whole lot more, we set out to make breakfast for each other because, as my alpha said, âWe burned a lot of energy last night, and I hope weâre going to burn a whole lot more.â
Once weâd decided to cook, we went to town. Scrambling eggs, frying bacon until the edges curled up and the smoky scent tickled our nostrils, making toast and topping it with a scraping of real butter. He even had some jam from a fruit stand here in town.
âAlpha, have you really known about us since high school?â I knew that I had, but I loved hearing him say it, too.
âYes, and arenât we something to have waited so long?â He divided the mountain of yellow fluffy eggs between two plates and then put some extra on mine. âHow many strips of bacon?â
âWe fried twelve.â It was all that were left in the package, or weâd have made more. âSix each.â
âNo, you can have more.â The alpha wanted to feed me. My squirrel was so happy inside me at this. âI only need three.â
âNo way. I canât eat that many. Weâll share equally.â I forked six slices on each plate. âAnd we have toast and coffee. What a feast.â
Sitting at the table, we didnât talk a lot, just ate and enjoyed the moment before standing to clear everything away together. We moved like people who had one anotherâs rhythm memorized. As, of course, we had, once, and it warmed my heart to know that while some very important things had changed, others had not. He washed, I rinsed, and nobody put anything away until it air-dried in the dish drainer.
When he voiced his fear that I might prefer friendship to being mates, I had realized something very important. I put my hand over his soapy one and patted, sending bubbles into the air. âYou are my friend, you know.â
His gaze came up to mine, wariness evident. âYes.â
âAnd I meant it when I said Iâd never friend zone you, but it occurs to me that when we talk about being friends or mates or lovers that those things donât have to be exclusive.â
He narrowed his gaze. âWhat are you saying?â
âThat you arenât one of those things to me. You are my best friend, the one I always have fun with and think of when I want to talk about something happening to me. Good or bad. I know I havenât been doing that in the past few years, but I always think of you and want to share with you.â
âYou can every day from now on,â he said, stroking my fingers.
âAnd my squirrel chants âmateâ at me every time I think of you, so thereâs that.â
âThere is that.â
âThen it comes down to that last part.â I licked my lips.
âLovers?â He lifted our linked hands out of the soapy water and turned me in to his body.
