Chapter 14

The following morning, Saturday, Mary wakes up late. Her body is aching and time has flown by without a hitch. Her memory of the night is vague, and she can’t remember much.

Outside the mansion, John and Michael Greeves are painting the last portion of the wall. They have been busy all morning finishing up while Mary slept.

“Sure am glad we’re almost done.” Michael says.

“Almost there.” John replies while painting. “Are you going to be able to finish this up while I run to town?”

“Oh sure… I think I can handle the rest. No problem. I’ll just clean up and head on out when I’m done. I sure don’t plan on staying here much longer. No offense but I just kind of want to be done with it and move on.”

“Take your time… It’s a nice day out today and just think, once you’re done, you’ll be able to enjoy the weekend without having to deal with me or my wife anymore.” John snickers.

“Sure has been fun…” Michael sarcastically replies. “Anyhow, are you sure you don’t need to take your wife with you?” He wishfully asks.

“She isn’t feeling well. The doctor wanted her to get some rest this weekend, so I’ll be leaving her here with you.” John chuckles to himself. “I hope she won’t be a problem.”

“Me too…” Michael quickly returns back to painting before John makes anymore comments about her. “I think I’ll just work straight through and head out. I have to leave town this evening to visit family.”

“Really?” John replies with interest. Looking down at his watch, he notices the morning is fading away. “Well, I think I’m going to run inside and check on Mary. I have to get to town soon. Think you can handle the rest?”

“Sure thing.” Looking over at the paint cans, Michael notices the last one is almost empty. “Before you go, would you mind running out to the shed and grabbing one last can of paint. That should just about do the job… I hope.”

“I think I can handle that…” Digging through his pocket, he feels for keys. “You know what… I think Mary keeps the shed key on her ring. I should probably grab it and make a copy. Have your key on you by any chance?”

Setting the empty cans off to the side, Michael removes a key ring clipped to his belt and walks over to John. Flipping through the keys, he singles out a small padlock key and hands the ring over to him. John takes the ring by the key and heads over to the shed to retrieve a can for him.

Inside the mansion, Mary soaks in a hot bubble bath. Dipping a washcloth in and out of the water, she lays it over her face. The mansion is quiet other than the sound of dripping water. Sinking into the bath water, she lowers her head beneath the surface. Almost drifting asleep to the sounds of the soft humming water, a structural impact clanks throughout the foundation waking her up.
