Ahead was the heavy fighting that would see the destruction of the German Army, the planning and execution of what has been called the first modern battle, and the great successes of the AIF in 1918.

On 23 March the battalion’s warning order to move was received, preparations made and completed and on 25 March the battalion, as part of the brigade, moved on foot. Marching Order and steel helmets were to be worn. After a train journey the brigade continued on foot, and covered 42 miles (67km) in two stages; only one man fell out. The unit war diary made the point that this showed the excellent physical condition and spirit of the battalion. The brigade took up defensive positions on the Somme, guarding vital bridges.
