Chapter 6
Hell, if I had half a brain, I would have started here to begin with. Could have saved a bunch of time and miles on the road.
And you would have missed that time with Nate, too, his inner beast reminded.
Okay. Iâll give you that one.
Donner ceased scolding himself as he walked across the dormant grass toward the modest white house. Nothing out of the ordinary. Frankly, âplainâ described the dwelling best. Yet, that fit their childhood completelyâmodest. There wasnât money for fancy items or big world tours. Instead, they hung out with Mother Nature and used their imaginations for further adventures.
Summers were spent in the country where the whole family would gather for a couple of weeks. With everyone spread all over the world, it was a time of reunion and reconnection. At least for the adults. Since he and Darrow were the only children, it became a chance to explore and share. Talk and bond. All the while trying out their skills to not only shift, but to reach the potential of their forefathers.
Reproductive rates amongst his extended family werenât high. Other families boasted of more children, but none of his shifter variety, as unique as they were, hit high numbers. While they traced their origins back hundreds of years, few representatives were able to produce offspring, whether they mated outside the species variety or not.
Good thing we have an extremely long life or weâd probably have died out long ago.
Or be on the top of the endangered species list and be raised in zoos, his inner beast quipped.
Not happening. Donner inwardly shuddered at the thought.
Pausing, he glanced back at the car, where heâd insisted that Nate wait. While he didnât think Darrow served any sort of threat, he preferred to keep him in a civil mood. He couldnât say what bringing in a stranger would do to an already precarious situation.
Nate stared at him through the side window, obviously a little perturbed with being left behind. Sitting on his hands and doing nothing obviously didnât agree with the man.
Iâll make it up to him once this business is finished.
Turning back around, Donner opened his senses, searching for his elusive brother. It came to him via scent. Following along, he trailed around the back of the house where the unattached garage stood. Next to it, a large, stately oak tree threw shade over the building and most of the area during the warmer months. Now, the leaves had died and been blown away, while the buds waited for spring to emerge once again. Its long branches reached out in all directions as if trying to capture every drop of sun possible. This was the same tree theyâd built a treehouse in many summers ago, playing for hours with imaginary tales of adventure and making up plans to pursue grand opportunities in life.
Oh, how naïve we were.
A quick peek found Darrow sitting in the doorway of the small getaway, his legs lightly swinging from his perch several feet in the air.
