I watched my friends as they left through the back door of the library. I turned and, after a bit of trial and error, found my way out into the main hall of the library. Thousands of books lined hundreds of shelves. The shelves themselves formed an almost maze-like structure. Within a few minutes I was completely disoriented; none of the books seemed to be organized in a way that made sense to me. Half the books didn’t even seem to have titles on the spines. I picked up one or two, flipping through the pages. One was written in a language I didn’t understand, another was written in runes, and the last one I tried was in English and seemed to be a local history book. As I placed it back on the shelf, someone cleared their throat, making me jump slightly.

“Might I help you, sir?” asked a young-looking human in long, gray robes.

“I’m afraid I am a bit lost,” I said honestly, “To be honest, I am not entirely sure what I am looking for.”

“Well, we scribes can find just about any book in the library with ease, or I can guide you out if that is what you wish,” he said gesturing down the row of shelves.

“No, I need to find something, I received a Quest after the most recent Incursion. During the Incursion I caught a glimpse of a stone with strange symbols on it. Now I am supposed to try and figure out what the symbols are, but I have no idea where to begin.”

“How interesting, you are not the first to make this request. A couple days ago a gentleman asked nearly the same thing, it is possible you both received the same Quest,” the scribe responded. I perked up at that.

“I don’t suppose you know who the man was?” I asked.

“Most likely it is in the records, I can check them and bring you the books that he was reading through, if that sounds good to you,” the scribe replied.

“That sounds great,” I said a touch too loudly, “Sorry,” I hastily said in a whisper.

“I shall take you to a reading room and bring you the books, follow me,” he offered before turning on his heel and leading me through the maze-like shelves. Within a couple minutes he had guided me to a small room with several overstuffed chairs and small tables. Empty paper and quills sat neatly on tables, ready to be used. “I shall bring you the books you have requested. I must remind you, of course, that writing in the books is strictly forbidden, and if you are discovered doing so you shall be permanently banned from the library. Also, none of the books can be removed from the library. You are allowed to use as much paper and ink as you need to make copies, of course. Have a seat, and I shall return in a few moments,” he said before turning and leaving me alone in the room.

I took a seat in one of the large, overstuffed chairs.
