Gero felt his heart pounding in his chest. The ravenous urge to kill took several long moments to subside. Like many of his Brethren, it struck him to his core when he was confronted by the dark side of his soul.

He shut his eyes and took a deep breath before he felt a tentative hand on his shoulder.

“Please,” Hannah said gently, “let him go, he didn’t mean those things. If you hurt him, he certainly won’t be able to help you anymore.”

Gero looked up. Two clear green eyes were fixed on his, so near and so intimate that he felt a sharp pang in his heart. Groaning, he rose and stuck his knife back into his belt. He felt dizzy. Abruptly he turned to the patio door and disappeared outside without looking back once.
