Chapter Seven

Dystra donned his black suit, with a silver-and-blue vest. His boots were polished and his hat had been brushed spotless. The only distraction from his suit jacket was the Colt Peacemaker on his hip. He wore it like a component of his wardrobe, a part of who he was.

Shari was as pretty as if she had stepped out of a painting. When she smiled at him, Dystra felt a wonderful warmth flood his being.

'You are the image of the dandy I spoke of previously,' she remarked astutely, as they walked over to the livery.

'And you're as radiant as a crystal chandelier,' he returned. 'Each time I dare think you are merely beautiful, you prove my deduction woefully inept.'

A hint of color rose into Shari's cheeks. She covered the reaction by looking at their mode of transportation. 'Were you aware this carriage has no top?'

'It needs repair. Would you like to take along your parasol to keep the sun off?'

'The sun will be down in a few minutes. How far is the ride?'

'Only about a mile. Hanover built his mansion far enough away to not be bothered by the freight-wagons or the people in town. The man enjoys his privacy, as well as every luxury money can buy. The spread is quite impressive.'

'So is Barr's reputation with women.'

'What have you learned?'

'According to gossip, he is in the habit of using his wealth and power to woo the women in town – both unwed and married.'

'Anything about Barr and your sister?'

'She and Ted were occasional guests and she visited him once or twice after Ted's death.'

'We'll see how he handles certain questions tonight.'

'We can get started,' Shari told him. 'If it's only a mile, I won't need to suffer the sun and dust and wind for very long. It shouldn't affect my hair.'

Dystra helped her into the carriage, joined her on the padded bench seat, and took a moment to study the fashionable look. 'Your hair is very nice.'

'It's a new style my mother wrote me about; I'm glad you like it.'

'On you, a dust rag would look cute.'

She laughed, but he could see she enjoyed the compliment. Dystra started the horse moving and got back to business.

'If the opportunity presents itself, I would like to get a look in Hanover's barn.'

'Why?'

'Someone drove your sister up to the mesa on the morning of her death. I'd like to rule out one possibility.'

' And how will looking into their barn help?'

'I need to see what kind of transport they use. The carriage which took your sister to the mesa was lightweight, probably a one-horse affair – like this one.'

'I haven't seen many small buggies on the street. Most of the wagons around appear to be the more practical, larger in size ... buckboard or carryall types. Didn't Buck have any idea as to who might have been driving?'

'He claims not.'

'Do you believe him?'

'I'm not convinced the man has been completely forthcoming, but we haven't learned much for certain yet. If Hanover is involved, he could have the entire town backing him.
