CHRIS HILL
Soon after returning from Florida, Lacey caught the attention of Chris Hill, who lived on the ground floor of the Cedar Key Apartments. The stocky, balding twenty-three-year-old with a goatee would often pass Lacey in the hallway.
“She was just kind of strange,” he recalled, “and kept to herself.”
Hill, a garage door installer, would see Lacey arrive home with JonJon, going upstairs to her apartment.
“She was always taking care of him,” said Hill, “day in and day out.”
He and his friends often drank cocktails in the parking lot, poking fun at Lacey.
“We called her ‘the Predator,’” he said, “as she always appeared so cold and distant. We would just mess with her.”
One night in early February 2008, Lacey came down to Hill’s apartment, asking for help assembling a new baby bassinet cradle she had bought for JonJon.
“So I went upstairs and put it together,” said Hill, “and one thing led to another. We did the business.”
Lacey spent the night in his bed, and the next morning they exchanged cell phone numbers.
“So we just started texting back and forth,” he said. “She said she liked me and wanted things to go a little further. And I said, ‘Sure, you’re cute. I like your personality. ’”
Lacey started going downstairs on dates, watching movies and having sex. But she would never stay the night, always making an excuse and going back upstairs.
“It was kind of a strange relationship,” explained Hill. “She wasn’t very affectionate.”
During sex, Lacey never brought up the subject of contraceptives, and Hill never mentioned it.
“I was a dumb-ass,” he admitted. “I drank a lot in those days and she didn’t. Maybe if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have made this mistake.”
On the rare occasions Lacey would invite him up to her apartment, he felt awkward. It was full of toys, and Rebecca and JonJon would always be there.
“I went up there sometimes,” he said, “but I felt uncomfortable being around her sister because she seemed not to approve of me. I felt more comfortable being in my zone.”
Although Lacey loved looking after JonJon and other small children, she would totally ignore Hill’s five-year-old son, Colton, whenever he visited.
“She acted like he didn’t exist,” said Hill, “and wouldn’t take care of him like she did the other children. I don’t know what that’s about.”
* * *
On February 14, 2008, JonJon turned one, and Lacey celebrated with a new album on MySpace, entitled “Classic—Jonathon 1 Year Old.” She posted 366 photos of her posing with her “Sweet Baby JonJon.”
“Hey Mommy Lacey,” she captioned one. “What Are You Doing Mommy Lacey,” she wrote on another. Other captions included “JonJon I love You,” “My World My Everything,” and “He Completes Me.”
One of Lacey’s MySpace friends saw her album, asking if JonJon was hers.
“Yes, he is,” Lacey replied. “That’s the love of my life. He was born Feb. 14.”
A few days later, Autumn Hunt learned that Lacey was claiming to be her son’s mother. Initially, she thought it was a misunderstanding, but then she went online and was livid.
