Chapter Six
Destin
I try to stay calm. I try to not freak out, but itâs not easy. How can I stay calm when my love, my mate, my husband, is in pain and I canât help him to make it go away?
Weâve been at the hospital all day, and itâs now late into the evening. The first couple of hours, nothing much happened, not with Seb or the labour itself.
But as the day progressed, he was in more and more pain. At first, we went for walks around the hospital, sitting down when he got a contraction, but then walking on again. I think weâve walked through the main part of the hospital well over ten times.
It wasnât the most interesting, but it kept us busy.
Then his pain became worse and we stayed in the room. My parents also arrived not too much later, bringing with them some food and also trying to keep us distracted.
Iâm not sure how well that all worked. But it was nice of them to come by, even if the room is now quite full with everyone here.
Maddy, Leon and Mikey have been very impatient, and have been messaging me, and then our parents, asking if they can come by too. Theyâve not bothered Seb with it, which is at least something, I think. I donât think I would have been that patient with them if theyâd also been bothering Seb with their questions.
But now, itâs already dark outside, weâre all tired, and I donât know how much longer I can watch Seb be in pain.
I take his hand, putting it to my lips, kissing him softly.
He meets my eyes, his exhaustion obvious and my heart breaks just watching him like that.
âDo you want me to get you something?â I feel like thatâs the only real thing I can do at the moment.
He shakes his head and squeezes my hand hard when another contraction goes through him. He lets out a low growl, closing his eyes as tightly as possible, until the pain is over.
I glance at Daddy. Canât we do anything?
The door opens and a nurse comes inside. When he sees us, he frowns. âNo progression?â
I shake my head, looking at Seb, who also shakes his head.
The nurse nods. âIâll go talk to the doctor. It might not be anything, sometimes labour just takes a long time, but we simply want to be sure.â And he disappears again.
Something wrong? Something might be wrong? I donât want that. That canât happen.
No.
Seb pulls on my hand. âItâs nothing. Really. Iâm fine. Like the nurse said, things can just progress very slowly. I might just be one of those unlucky people.â His smile is exhausted, pained.
Not that that makes me feel any better. I donât want Seb to be unlucky. Things have been unlucky enough for him as they are... I want something good to happen to Seb.
For something to go easy, not everything to always throw up problems.
For anything to go right...
