Chapter Eight

Jo awoke Sunday morning to the sound of her doorbell. Grumbling, she climbed out of bed and trudged through the house. She glanced at the clock in the living room as she passed. She would normally be awake by nine a.m., but she’d stayed up until the early morning hours bingeing a documentary series about serial killers.

By the time she swung open the front door, she spotted a kid—she guessed about ten or eleven—jump on a bicycle at the end of her driveway and pedal away. She didn’t see a face, just the back of a head of curly, dark hair and a striped T-shirt on a lime-green BMX-style bike.

At her feet, a cardboard box with a folded top, the kind restaurants used for leftovers, sat on the top step. She picked it—and the card underneath—up and carried them inside the house. She hadn’t seen that bike before, so she didn’t think the kid lived on her street. The outside of the box felt warm.

She set her gifts on the kitchen island and opened the card first.
