Chapter 8

Benoit

“How about we go mountain biking?” Jacques proposed after lunch.

Benoit agreed. If he couldn’t get sex, he would have to find his thrills some other way, and mountain biking sounded like fun. He could almost remember it. Not any specific rides, but the feel of flying headlong down a steep incline, fresh air in his face and adrenalin rushing through his bloodstream.

They loaded their bikes onto the roof of Jacques’s car and made a short drive to a spot where Jacques said the trails were moderate. He didn’t trust Benoit to know what he was doing, but Benoit proved him wrong. Conventional wisdom said riding a bike was something you didn’t forget how to do, and he hadn’t forgotten how to do it. In fact, he turned out to be really good at it, insisting on taking the lead despite Jacques’s reminders that he wasn’t familiar with the terrain. He felt familiar with it—remembering each turn, crest, or obstacle as he came to it.

They stopped along a stream to share a protein bar and a bottle of water with their helmets and shoes off, sitting on sun-warmed rocks with their feet dangling into the icy brook. Jacques snapped picture after picture of him, but refused to show him any of them.

“You just look so happy,” Jacques said.

“I feel happy.”

He ought to be worried, given the uncertainty hanging over his head. When would he remember? Would he remember? He had a job out there, one Jacques claimed was being understanding about why he couldn’t come in right now, but their understanding wouldn’t last forever. Memory or not, he would have to go back to work at some point.

Right now, Jacques had time off too—family leave, to care for him—and it seemed like a gift, these precious days of not knowing, of not being who they’d been before, of just being who they were now. He wanted to take advantage of every moment they’d been given. Most particularly, he wanted to take advantage of it to have sex. It struck him as vitally important that they have sex now, before he remembered.

The way he’d been able to ride suggested the veil was already lifting. Images would continue to come clearer until one morning he would wake up and be the man he’d once been—a man who’d loved Jacques but hadn’t been fucking him. And he didn’t want to be that man.

“I think it would be safer if you slept in the guest room,” Jacques said as Benoit started to undress that night.

Safer. Bleh. He didn’t give a fuck being safe. Too bad he’d thrown away the concussion-protocol excuse.

“You’re not really going to pitch me out, are you?” He was already in Jacques’s bed because it was easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission. He remembered that. “Come on, Jackie. I need you.”

“You need Samantha. You just think you need me because of transference.”

“Transference, schmansference.” He knew what he needed. “Just some snuggles then. So I don’t feel so all alone.”

“Okay, but just snuggles.
