When I got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, I found Brittany spread out next to me like a starfish. Her arms were opened wide, one of them shoved under my head like a pillow, and her short legs were spread just as wide. Seeing her sleep with such abandon cracked me up.
After I used the facilities, I hunted around for my phone, plugging it into the charger and setting the alarm so we wouldnât miss our exit meeting at Bowman & Company.
The rollout had gone well, and Brittany and I had completed the entire project ahead of schedule, which meant weâd both be receiving a nice bonus from Madison Phoenix. The owner of the company offered generous incentives for exceeding expectations, and it motivated us all to work towards excellence.
I flashed back to my first day of work at Phoenix. Iâd noticed Brittany right away, admiring her white blonde hair, pale skin, and expressive eyes. Iâd been drawn to her, although it hadnât felt romantic. It had been more like she was the sun, and I was pulled into her orbit. I was new to Seattle at the time, and I immediately wanted to be friends with her.
When we were assigned to the same team and given an office to share, Iâd been thrilled. Despite our different backgrounds and personalities, Brittany and I had become fast friends as well as close collaborators at work. She helped bring some fun and levity to my serious personality, and I helped ground her. People at work called us the âpower duoâ because we always brought our projects in on time and on budget.
Over the years weâd had the opportunity to get our own offices and work with other teams but had chosen to stay in place so we could bounce ideas off of each other and remain work partners. No sense messing with success.
When weâd first become friends, some of our coworkers had assumed that we were dating, despite our denials. After theyâd met a few of the people we dated, theyâd started calling us each otherâs âoffice wifeâ.
Iâd never heard that phrase, but thanks to a Google search Iâd learned that people were calling us that because we spent so much time together and were connected like a married couple, but without the romantic element to our relationship.
I just hoped that Brittany and I hadnât just ruined a good thing by sleeping together. It felt so right to be in her arms, but when morning came, we needed to go back to the way things were. It was what weâd agreed to.
But as I climbed back in bed and snuggled close to Brittany, I had a bad feeling that going back to normal would be harder than either of us was expecting.
When I woke up again, Brittany was awake and dressed, sipping a cup of coffee while looking at her tablet. She was probably checking Instagram. Sheâd been obsessed with that app since the first time sheâd heard about it.
