Chapter 27

Kea

If it weren’t for my dad today, I wouldn’t have come to court to see the fate of my so-called mother, who was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. In my mind, she deserved whatever she got. The entire trial, from what Daddy told me, consisted of her being the victim and this thug was lying on her. Of all the individuals in the world, why would this young guy point his finger at her saying she paid him to kill Mr. Hanks? The irony alone with him being the man she hated most was enough to make her look guilty. But Mom couldn’t see it. Again, she was Frances Fields, a prominent figure in her community who didn’t have so much as a parking ticket. She was so busy trying to be something she wasn’t that she couldn’t see she was a charlatan. She had committed forgery on her own life and was too conceited to see it.

When Mother was walked into the courtroom, she was dressed in one of her best suits looking like she hadn’t spent one day in jail for the crime she had committed. Mama looked my way and didn’t so much as smile at me. Her glance was cold and heartless; but why would I expect anything different from the woman who never wanted me in the first place, and made it known most of my life how she didn’t care for me? I wanted to get up and walk out right then. But when I saw the concerned look on my father’s face, I knew I had to stay.

“You may be seated,” the bailiff said and everyone in the courtroom sat down.

I looked over at Daddy, who still looked worried. I knew this was because he still loved Frances despite how heartless she’d been to him. Isn’t it always like that? A good man always ends up with a woman who never deserved him in the first place. Looking at my father’s gray hair let me know the life he’d led should have been better spent than him spending it with a woman who could toss him away like yesterday’s trash. I knew he stayed for me and Emory. Thank God he did because I don’t know where I would be now. Still, I hated it had to be at the cost of my father’s life.

“Frances Fields, you have been convicted of conspiracy to commit murder. Do you have anything you would like to say to the court?” the judged presiding over the trial asked.

She looked at her lawyer before saying, “Yes, Your Honor. I would like to speak.”

“Address the court,” the judge said.

“First, I would like to say the verdict that was decided for me was erroneous. I’m totally appalled the
