Sean kept that envelope and added to it. He opened a bank account. Making sure he didn't spend too much of the money he earned was the trick. His first year of college didn't leave him enough time to earn big bucks. He saved up thinking about the future.
A year after Brian left, Sean put his plan into motion. First he had to find out where Brian lived now. Sean started with his mother. She didn't know of course. Reluctantly, she gave him the name and phone number of Brian's uncle, the only relative from his "real family" she knew about.
It was a shabby apartment building, and the uncle took a long time to answer the door. He wasn't well. He used a walker to get around. On disability because of an injury to his hip, he was sorry he couldn't do more for his nephew. Brian's uncle's name was Steven Nikolaev. Nikolaev was also the name Brian was using now. So strange. It used to be Benson, same as Sean. Legally it was still Brian Benson. Brian's uncle said he hadn't changed it. Sean liked the thought that they still shared a name. Through the uncle, Sean found Brian again. Or at least where he lived.
Sean entered a part of town where there was little difference between a liquor store, a convenience store, and a grocery store. He had already passed by a "Certified Psychic Advice" sign and "Accurate Astrology and Palm Reading". He saw a woman walking around with a multitude of plastic bags that did not hold recent purchases. A man passed by pushing an old bicycle loaded with house painting supplies including a small ladder. Occasionally, someone would scowl at Sean from a doorway. The neighborhood didn't get any better or worse as he got closer to Brian's address.
Sean looked up at the gray facade of the apartment building. That's where Brian lived now. Sean took a deep breath and went in. It wasn't the nicest place. He was greeted by some unwelcome smells as he went in. It was a mix of kitchen and bathroom smells mingling. A little graffiti was painted over with a thin coat of paint that muted but didn't cover it up. Sean looked at the elevator but didn't trust it to take him up or to smell tolerable. He took the stairs cautiously as if watching for an ambush.
It was Sunday. Brian's uncle said he would be home. But Sean got nervous when the door stayed shut after he knocked. When it opened, he almost didn't recognize Brian. His hair was short. His physique more severe, leaner but stronger looking. Sean smiled at him, but Brian didn't smile back. Sean moved to go in, and Brian barely got out of his way. It wasn't exactly an invitation or a welcome, but Sean was in. That's what mattered.
As Brian closed the door, Sean looked at the one room apartment. Two shelves with books were against one wall. A mattress and box spring sat on a bare metal frame.
