CHAPTER TWELVE
RYAN
“Ryan Mahony!”
I just about jumped out of my skin when my name was hollered. I had heard it shouted like that twice a month since my da was sent to prison, and it still scared me half to death. It was alerting me that it was my time slot for my visiting hour with him.
I quickly gathered up my things and proceeded towards the security gate. I had already passed through two of these stop-and-search checkpoints since entering the prison, but I had nothing on me to hide so I wasn’t worried about them.
I stood still and followed the instructions given to me by the guards as they patted me down, searched my bag and had me stand in an X-ray scanner of sorts so they could triple-check that I wasn’t smuggling anything illegal into the prison on my person or inside my body. Not that I would ever consider it. I’d be too terrified of getting caught to even attempt it.
“Thank you,” I said to the guard who handed me back my bag after I passed through the checkpoint.
I made sure my visitor’s badge was visible as I headed towards the small shop, where I purchased coffees, snacks and some sandwiches. I bought a lot of extra goodies for my da to bring back to his cell after our visit. He worked in the kitchen and got paid for it, but the amount he earned wasn’t enough to splurge on sweets, so I did that for him.
Once everything was placed into a plastic bag, I checked my badge for the room number I was assigned and headed towards visitor room six. I showed my badge to the guard who was stood outside the room. He checked his clipboard to make sure my information matched up with his.
“Go on in, Ryan,” he told me. “Your aul’ lad will be in shortly.”
I smiled my thanks and entered the tiny room. It was nothing special; it had a small table with two chairs, a window overlooking the mountains, a chair off to the side for the guard, and a rubbish bin. Two cameras were on the ceiling, but I never looked up at them if I could help it. I had always got a small room whenever I came visiting. The more people you had in your visiting party, the bigger the room you were assigned.
I had passed by one of the family rooms before, and saw it to be colourful, with toys of all sorts on the floor. Obviously, that was a room for inmates whose young children came to visit.
Once I was settled in my chair, I placed mine and my da’s piping-hot coffees down, then emptied out some of the sweets and sandwiches onto the table. Everything else that I’d bought for my da to bring back to his cell I left in the bag on the floor, knowing the guard would have to document each item, then take away the plastic bag and replace it with a paper one.
