CHAPTER TWENTY
Sharing my lunch
When I awake the next morning, I officially begin keeping my morning-after journal, which Dr. Bazely asked me to do. Itâs probably a waste of time, but Bazely is the clone brain expert, so if he says do it, then Iâll do it. That said, I have no intention of keeping a written journal. God, that would mean writing words on paper with a pen, which is uncivilized and not going to happen. I downloaded a cool app for my MacBook, which allows me to record video journal entries using my laptopâs built-in camera. After I boot up my computer and launch the app, I begin.
âCaptainâs log, star date 12345.6.â I bring a hand over my mouth to hide a giggle. This feels so freaking stupid. âThis is me, Willa, coming to you live from my bedroom in glorious Middletown, Maryland.â I pick up my laptop and twist it around so the camera can take in the whole space. âThis is day one of my great or infamous journey to or from Hell. Iâm not sure which. And here beside me is the best dog in the world. Ta-da! Grin at the camera, Rin.â
I yank Rinâs collar to drag him farther into the picture, but he keeps trying to twist away.
âRin!â I hiss through clenched teeth. âIf I have to do this, you have to do this!â
This is lamer than a one-legged man.
âLike I said, this is Rin. When heâs not being cranky, heâs a great dog. Yes, heâs coyote ugly, but his heart is always in the right place...mostly.â
Me? Not to rain on your parade, but you have serious bed hair.
âShut up, whisker face.â Rin promptly collapses on the floor with his snout resting on his paws. âAnyway, as for my dreams last night, I dreamt I was in the grocery store with my mom, but we got separated. I ran all around the store trying to find her, but every time I caught sight of her, sheâd disappear around another corner. Weird, huh? Since I hate grocery shopping with my mother, this could qualify as a nightmare, except I wasnât scared. Anyway, thatâs all I remember. So, back to going where no person has gone before.â
Rin stands and I reach for his collar, but in the ensuing struggle, he twists free and bolts for the door.
âCoward!â I holler after him.
When I turn back to the camera, I clear my throat and press on. In addition to my dreams, Iâm supposed to talk about whatâs bothering meâmy anxieties, fears, concerns. Bazely thinks that by forcing myself to describe stuff, Iâll also be facing down demons and confronting my issues. I think heâs crazy himself, but whatever.
âI think what my dream means is that Iâm trying to find my mother, except I donât have a mother. Not really. I was sort of born last May, since thatâs the earliest real memory I have. Something about me is off, wrong, not working right. Maybe my dream is showing me that I want to be normal, I want to have a real mother and family like everyone else.
