Dwight vigorously cut into the spaghetti carbonara for the umpteenth time. The knife scraped against the plate with an intolerably high-pitched shriek. It was a small wonder that nobody had kicked them out of the restaurant yet. Patrons at other tables occasionally shot them dirty looks.
"You have really pretty eyes," Dwight said with a mouth full of bite-size noodles.
Lydia's eyes weren't particularly beautiful. Bog standard brown like her hair. Some people with brown eyes actually had pretty ones, like Melody, who had a warm hazel color that glowed in the darkness.
"Thanks," Lydia said, demonstratively curling up a nice portion of noodles with her fork, completely silent.
The thick, black frame glasses on Dwight's nose bounced up and down as he angrily chewed.
"You know, it is customary that when someone gives you a compliment, you return it. I have noticed you not doing that twice before now. This makes three."
"You're good at counting," Lydia said with a smile.
The Tinder profile made Dwight seem like a completely different person. He had a shaved head, a well-groomed beard, and was forty-three years old. A manager of a small hardware store. According to his blurb, he liked "intellectually stimulating conversations" and board games. The picture was accurate and he had shown up in a dress shirt, smelling nice.
Then he started talking and didn't stop until the food arrived.
"I complimented your physique and you tell me I'm good at something a child can do?"
"I've seen children that are terrible at counting."
"Well, I think you can count on there not being a second date," Dwight said in a huff.
That was perfectly fine with Lydia. The date didn't last much longer. After rupturing the eardrums of everyone in a two-mile radius, he insisted on paying the bill because that is "what gentlemen do" even if she "couldn't appreciate basic decency." She waited until he left and then rounded up the tip from ten percent to thirty percent, along with an apology to the waitress.
Back in the car, she called Sandra.
"Uh oh. If you're calling me, the date must not have gone well," Sandra said.
"It was awful. He cut his spaghetti, Sandy. Cut. With a knife."
"Oh, dear."
"I've got nothing to do now. I can pick up the kids from school if you want."
"Nah, I'm gonna be there regardless to pick up my dry cleaning. Go treat yourself to something nice and destress."
"Alright, thanks. I might go hang out with Melody if she's not busy."
"And I thought I was your best friend," Sandra said with a mock sigh.
"You'll always be my best friend but she's really interesting. I can't stop thinking about her."
"Maybe you should go date her, then," Sandra laughed. "You know, I actually kind of want to meet her now."
"Would it be okay if I invited her to Friendsgiving?"
"Uhh... sure, I don't see why not," Sandra said after a moment of hesitation. "Just make sure to warn her that we are going to talk about it."
"Will do. I'll pick up Sophie before dinner, then."
"I promised the girls I'd teach them how to make lasagna.
