CHAPTER TWELVE

After the initial interrogation from Juniper about why he was there, which he deftly avoided, Desmond found himself in the bathroom off the ballroom, which had been his goal for this little visit. Victoria knew, but she was the only one, and he wanted to keep it that way.

Desmond hadn’t found much on Tiffany’s phone. Just the usual pictures of her friends posing at the party and lots of selfies. Stomper was on him about this case. He didn’t have much to go on, so he thought it might be worthwhile to take another look at the scene of the crime.

But so far, he had found nothing of interest, except that the mirror was a little crooked. But his team had already looked behind it and dusted it for prints, so that led him nowhere.

He was about to call his investigation done when one of the cats—the gray one he’d heard Tori call Finn—came racing into the bathroom. He ran around Desmond’s legs and straight to a corner of the wall, where he started scratching.

“What in the world?” Desmond bent down to see a tiny opening in the corner. A mouse hole? Who knew a fancy mansion like this would have mice? Apparently, the cat knew, because he was snaking his paw into the hole as if trying to catch one.

“Watch out you don’t get bit by one.” Desmond said to Finn, who was paying no attention to him.

Finn pawed and batted and then jerked his paw out. Along with it came something shiny. Desmond bent down to inspect it and found, to his surprise, an earring.

Feeling a bit victorious, Desmond picked up the earring with a piece of tissue then straightened. Finn didn’t seem the least bit impressed and simply trotted away while Desmond inspected the earring. It was a stud earring with three diamonds in graduating sizes.

Could it have fallen off and rolled into the mouse hole during the struggle? It didn’t match the gold hoops that Tiffany was wearing, which meant it could be from the killer.

More likely, though, it belonged to Juniper or Tori. He had no way of knowing how long it had been in there, but he doubted his forensics team would have looked in such a tiny opening.

He exhaled a short sigh of exasperation as he came to realize he was going to have to ask if the earring belonged to someone living in the house. He didn’t want to bring Juniper’s attention to the case any more than he strictly needed to, and this was sure to get the wheels in her head turning if the earring turned out to belong to someone else. There was nothing for it but to ask, though.

Unless…

He turned to look to see if he was alone and came face-to-face with none other than Felicity. His heart only thumped a couple of times at the sudden sight of her.

She smiled at him. “I do apologize for scaring you, Mr. Mallard. It was not my intention.” She
