THE DAY had been one Danny would never forget. Exhausting. Exhilarating. Empowering. Frightening.
He had spent the afternoon packing his few belongings away, trying to make Jayâs spare bedroom feel like home. Jay had told him to spread out, think of the entire house as his, but Danny couldnât do that. Not yet anyway. He felt out of place. He felt like a nuisance. Jayâs kindness was still almost more than Danny could accept without tearing up and making a sobbing fool of himself all over again.
As the hours of their first day together drew to a close, Danny grew quieter and quieter. Jay had some raw hamburger and buns left, so he whipped up a pot of sloppy joes, added a bigass bag of Ruffles, and they had dinner, once again on the porch.
âHope youâre not into health food,â Jay joked.
âThis isnât health food?â Danny joked right back, but as soon as the words were out of his mouth, he grew serious again, melancholy about everything that had happened. After dinner, Jay asked Danny to walk with him. As dusk began to darken the mountaintop, he sought out Dannyâs hand while they strolled along a game trail.
Appreciating the gesture, Danny twined his fingers through Jayâs as they walked. Carly and Jingles were off in the brambles somewhere chasing rabbits. Every few minutes, their excited yelps let Danny know they were still close, still safe.
âI hope you donât mind me holding your hand. This path can be tricky if you donât know it. I donât want you to fall,â Jay said.
âI donât mind at all,â Danny said. âI like holding your hand.â
Jay opened his mouth as if to respond but quickly closed it and said nothing. Danny wondered what Jay had meant to say but didnât ask. He had further words of his own he wanted to speak, but they were hard to get out. Jay wasnât looking at him, which should have made it easier, but before Danny could try again, he stumbled on a stone. Jayâs broad hand anchored him and kept him from falling. The anchor metaphor wasnât lost on Danny.
âYouâve kept me steady all day, Jay. I never could have done what I did today without your help.â
Jay grunted. âFriends,â he said, as if that was enough to explain his actions.
Danny fought the urge to drop his head to Jayâs shoulder as they walked. He was so drawn to the man. Everything about Jay excited Danny. But that wasnât why he was here. He was here to get his life back on track. He was here to escape a relationship that was, frankly, killing him. Jay had been right about that. One day, Joshua really wouldâve gone too far, and whether by accident or design, Danny would have paid the ultimate price. He didnât doubt it for a minute. Joshua would have killed him.
It was Jayâs touch that gave Danny the courage to say what he had to say. Jayâs touch and Jayâs gentleness. It was all a brand-new experience for Danny.
