Chapter 14
Merlize
I knew it was coming. Sooner or later, it will come to this. But how come it hurts so much? Why do I feel an ache in my chest whenever I think about him? Like a burning black hole sucking in my existence.
âYouâve got a job to do, Merlize Chapman. Do it and become the Senior Partner.â
I give myself a pep talk as I walk to Lindermanâs office. Heâd suddenly called me out of the blue, probably to talk about the deal with Adam.
And thereâs the aching again. Itâs so intense that I have to lean against the paneled wall and do some deep breathing exercise Tammy taught me yesterday. Itâs been about a week since the showdown at Charlesâs restaurant, and thereâs been a huge tension between Adam and I ever since.
âYouâll become the senior partner and soon forget all about Adam. Who gives a fuck about him anyway?â Tammyâs excited, high-pitched voice rings in my head.
Sheâs right. I shouldnât give a damn about Adam. But the thing is, I do. I really do.
I finally get the aching under control and march confidently, at least thatâs how I hope to portray myself, to Lindermanâs office. I expect his fat face to scowl up in anger. His thin lips will pucker, and heâll shout himself hoarse demanding I wrap things up quick with Adam until he becomes red in the face, just like heâd always done every time he calls me into his office since the past couple of weeks. Sometimes, heâd invite Richard to witness the showdown, and the golden boy will be all smiles and smirks as I get shaken down.
Iâm already prepared for whatâs to come.
âWelcome,â Lindermanâs charming smile unnerved me, âMerlize.â
He only ever smiles if the firm takes in a new huge client or if he wants something. Since I havenât won Adam over yet, I squint my eyes in confusion as I take the outstretched hands of my cunning boss. What does Linderman wants from me?
âThank you, Mr. Linderman.â
âPlease,â he laughs, which is scary rather than calming, âcall me Linderman. I know you all do that behind my back, but you have the special grace to do it right in front of me.â
âLinderman, you called for me.â
âYes, please, sit down,â he offered me a chair.
âI did call for you to ask about the update on the Adam Starling case.â
âYes, sir,â I stutter, âweâve already identified five companies weâd likely invest in, and I assure you Iâll get it done in theâ¦â
âItâs okay, Chapman,â Linderman stops my rambling, âgeez, you really are nervous. Iâm not here to chew your head about the deadline. So calm down, okay.â
âOkay, sir.â
âGood,â Linderman leans forward, âyouâre a very ambitious woman, Merlize, and I like that a lot. Itâs not easy running circles around men in a male dominated field but you do it quite well.â
âThank you, sir,â I bow my head slightly, expecting the part where he makes demands after his self-serving flattery.
âI know I donât say this often, but Iâm really proud of you and what you have achieved.
