The biggest problem, she concluded, was the classic ‘Catch 22’ situation; she’d never been in a romantic relationship before and thus did not know how to react to boys. She even took a comprehensive online Jungian psyche test that concluded she was 67% introverted, 25% sensing, 25% feeling, and 1% judging. Her comment when getting the results was, “I’ve no idea what the results mean, by the way.”

I think that perhaps the self-analysis was triggered, in part, by her upcoming twenty-first birthday. Alex had the realization that she was about to become an adult, and was feeling a little left behind in the romance stakes. The introspection and self-analysis soon took a back seat, however, because her inward-looking mood was overtaken by the excitement of our upcoming trip to England.

We had bought an apartment in Kendal with the specific intention of it becoming a regular place to visit, but in reality, our trips were sporadic. In anticipation of this year’s visit, we’d pre-planned a week-long hiking trip in the Lake District so that we could indulge our love of the countryside. Before the walk, Alex got to spend her usual time working with Auntie Ann in the local café on the promenade of Grange-Over-Sands. Alex loved everything about the visit and the Lakes:
