For the costumes referred to in these letters, the attire of the period was thoroughly researched by Ray, and then Andrew Mollo was hired to draw the sketches for the costumes. Andrew is the younger brother of John Mollo, two-time Oscar winner for costume design in Star Wars and Gandhi. Much to our dismay, Andrew’s wonderful sketches for Shatranj Ke Khilari were later lost or stolen, and hence could not be included in this book.

As for the translations, Ray wrote his original screenplay dialogues in English and many people were considered for the translation—as is reflected in the letters—but eventually Javed Siddiqui and Shama Zaidi translated them from English to Urdu/Hindi. Ray wrote all his film dialogues in Bengali. His English was also impeccable, but his knowledge of Hindi and Urdu was minimal. Shatranj Ke Khilari’s dialogues were translated into Urdu/Hindi and Awadhi, the local dialect of the Awadh region, of which Lucknow was the capital. In the film, the aristocrats speak Urdu among themselves, but when addressing the domestic staff they speak Awadhi.
