KISS, BELA
Mass murderer who successfully disposed of his lovers and other victims and disappeared into obscurity.
Bela Kiss was a tinsmith with a business in the Hungarian village of Czinkota. When his wife Marie left him for her artist lover, Kiss appeared distraught. But he soon had tongues wagging with his own philanderings as a succession of buxom widows came and went from his house.
All this came to an end in 1914 when Kiss was drafted into the army. He secured his house with locks and chains and left Czinkota for the war. In May 1916 word was received that Kiss had been killed in action. Shortly afterwards, the security of his house was breached by police searching for hoarded petrol.
When officers found seven metal casks in the attic of Kiss’s house, they assumed they had found a black market supply of fuel. They were astonished when they prised the lid off one of the casks and revealed a woman’s body. Six of the other casks contained similar gruesome remains and seventeen more corpses were found buried in the ground around the house.
Among Kiss’s possessions were found numerous letters from women who had replied to his advertisements. By this means he had lured well-off widows to his home where he strangled them and pawned their clothes and jewellery. The victims included Marie Kiss and her artist lover.
After the war, people who knew Kiss claimed to have seen him in Budapest despite reports that he had died in Serbia. Inquiries into the circumstances of his supposed death showed that he might have swapped civilian life with a new identity. Other rumours had it that he fled to the USA or joined the French Foreign Legion.
