Grant reluctantly agreed to Alizon accompanying him to the police station. They hoped to find out more about the man who had confessed, and what stage the police were at in their investigation. Grant’s regular contact was away on holiday so it would be tougher than usual to gather any information.

The wooden police station door showed signs of a tough life. Originally painted dark blue, it was covered in scratches, dents and graffiti. It creaked as they opened it and four people sitting on chairs in the waiting area looked up, then without a word returned to looking at their phones. The ageing Magnolia walls were plastered with notices like CRIMESTOPPERS - YOU COULD GET A REWARD IF YOU REPORT A CRIME! Other notices announced the contact details for several support groups including the Samaritans. The hard plastic chairs were bolted to the once-red vinyl covered floor, and the room smelled of a citrus air freshener.

They went to the desk which was high and behind unbreakable glass. A weary-looking police woman was busy tidying papers, but managed a tired smile when she saw them.

‘How can I help you?’ she asked.

Grant got out his Press Pass, ‘I’m Grant Thomson, and I’m a reporter for The News. I wonder if I can speak to someone about the man who has confessed to Edel Loset’s murder.’

Before the officer answered, a door at the side opened. A policeman showed a man out with the parting words, ‘Don’t you go wasting police time any more!’

The policewoman looked at Grant and then the man, indicating he was who they were asking about.

Grant and Alizon stopped him outside the building, ‘I’m a reporter,’ Grant said, ‘I gather you’ve been released after confessing to murder. There’s a pub along the street, can I buy you a drink?’

The man looked at them both for a minute then shrugged his shoulders, ‘Don’t see why not. As long as it’s warm in there, I don’t care what I drink. But I’d want a sandwich as well, mind you.’ he paused, ‘Wait a minute, will there be any witches in there? I don’t like witches. Nasty ‘orrible things, some of them.’

Alizon caught her breath, but Grant simply looked at her and raised his eyes in the universal body language for ‘We’ve got a madman here!’

‘No, no witches,’ he promised.

The pub was busy. Old men in cloth caps played dominoes at one table; a group of women chatted and laughed in the opposite corner; darts thudded into the dartboard in the next bar. The temperature in the pub met the man’s requirements, and he sat at the table nearest the roaring coal fire. He held out his red, chapped hands towards the flames and let out a sigh of contentment.

Then he turned and shook hands with Grant and Alizon. ‘I’m Tom, by the way, and I’ll have a pint of bitter and a double scotch chaser.’

So much for not minding what he drank. He also ordered a cheese and ham sandwich and chips.
