His mental state could not be clearer. He needed no encouragement from Edith to do something desperate.

Over the next week, the lovers resumed their London trysts. There were the usual snatched lunch and tea meetings, including tea at one of their favourite haunts, Fullers, opposite Carlton & Prior, on Friday 29 September. The following morning there was a daring open-air sex session in Wanstead Park, which Freddy mentioned in a letter later that same day, calling Edith his ‘little devil’. He hand-delivered this letter during their late lunch together at Queen Anne’s restaurant the following Monday, and she hurriedly read it on returning to work.

By the time she met him again, in Fullers tea room a few hours later, Edith had produced a reply in the form of an addition to a letter she’d already begun. It was her last known letter to Freddy before the murder and it would provide further ammunition for a prosecution intent on proving her active involvement in the crime. In fact, both in context and in key passages, it would be misunderstood – some might argue deliberately misunderstood – by the Crown.

The letter starts with Edith’s familiar theme of joy at being with Freddy and the knowledge that he is her lover even when they are apart:

Darlint, we’ve said we’ll always be pals haven’t we, shall we say we’ll always be lovers – even tho’ secret ones, or is it (this great big love) a thing we can’t control – dare we say that – I think I will dare. Yes I will ‘I’ll always love you’ – if you are dead – if you have left me even if you don’t still love me, I always shall you.
