Ch 35

Monday 10:00am

I visited the Jefferson Hospital Cardiology division on my own. I didn’t want to alert anyone but just wanted to be diligent but quiet. I met with the head of the department a Dr. Whitehead; I wanted to ask her questions specifically about Dr. Topaz, she was very young to be a head of a medical department, but I approached her as if she were qualified and seasoned enough for the position she held.

“My name is Dr Detective Lucky Lomax, I have a few questions about Dr Topaz,” I said.

She looked astonished, “Are you a medical doctor and a police officer Mr. Lomax? You have me at a disadvantage, I don’t know which title to address,” she said.

“I am both and the Mr. Title can be utilized also.”

“Well Dr. Topaz is one of our best heart specialists in the hospital and some say in the US, also”.

“Other than a work related bases, what do you know about his personal life, is he married, if not does he have a significant other.”

“I don’t know much about his personal life; he’s single but as a doctor you know we work long hours and the only time we have set aside is usually extremely small outside these antiseptic walls. But here in this file is everything you want to know about him and his relationship to this hospital.”

“Well he was the one who requested the time given to the patient and since the patient had the rare heart disorder, Aortic Dissection, so it wasn’t unusual,” she said drearily.

I followed up by speaking to the warden, he said that they had taped some of his visits to the Prison, and the only thing he could make out was the normal checkup that a Doctor would give. At any rate any tapes that I wanted to examine he would send me. We had an address and proceeded to his place of residence. Given the nature of the crimes and the potential for danger we had SWAT and other plain clothes police as backup. I gave a hard knock on the door, “Dr. Topaz, it’s the police we have a warrant and would like to speak with you.”

There was no answer at the door, it appeared at one time that this was a very fashionable home but all that was left here was a trash and garbage strewn dwelling, the living room walls were covered with news clippings which was all the murders committed by the Grim Reaper and a very big surprise was the picture of me prominently hanging on the wall, with the words the enemy written in large red letters. We searched the home from top to bottom; there on
