CHAPTER 11
While police officers were going through Luke's hotel looking for clues of a break-in, Luke talked with Inspector Flowers.
"Maybe somebody did break in here, but they haven't stolen any money and they seem to have left your laptop alone, which rules out a robbery. Do you know of anything that has been stolen?" Flowers asked.
Luke shook his head in frustration. "No. But I know that somebody has broken into this room and searched the room for something they wanted. I could just sense it when I walked in."
"You sensed it? But if nothing was taken, then what you are telling me is that no crime has been committed."
Luke said nothing, but went back over to the police dossier Flowers had copied for him at the start of Ella's investigation. Flowers noticed what Luke was looking at, and commented, "I see even our police file has been left alone?"
Luke grunted an agreement under his breath at the inspector, but still wasn't happy. Not in the least. He looked at the file, browsed through it again, but couldn't point to any one thing, such as missing pages or photographs.
"You want to know my opinion, Detective?" Flowers offered.
Luke looked across at the inspector from where he was standing in front of the mirror. He watched the two uniformed officers in the reflection who were standing around looking bored, obviously waiting for their boss to give the all-clear for them to leave and get back on the street, where the sun was shining and the beach was full of good-looking tourists.
"Tell me, Inspector," Luke said, already knowing where this was going.
"I think some undesirable locals managed to get past the reception desk and were looking for a room to break into. They could have bribed one of the staff to tell them who they think might have money, jewelry, or even drugs and what room they stayed in. That's how they chose which room to target. They went for the Americans. They got in and out without causing suspicion, because they had help from one of the staff members who work here.
âHowever, when they found out that youâre clearly not a drug dealer or a rich woman with lots of necklaces and watches, they took a look around and left. And once they found out that a police officer was staying in this room, it probably spooked them enough that they left immediately.
âThey knew if they took the laptop, or police file, our officers would come looking for the usual suspects early in the morning, and we would be dragging them out of their beds and down to the station, where they would be kept for as long as possible. You should count yourself lucky that nothing was taken," Flowers said, watching Luke for his reaction.
"I know I'm lucky everything still seems to be here," Luke said. "But even though that theory kind of works, I know it's not what happened."
"I disagree, and I think it is what happened. Tourists around the world get robbed every day, and that's exactly what this looks like.
