CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Murdock looked around the campsite and shivered from the early morning air, or perhaps it was fear. Like his men, he had spent the night hiding in the woods until daylight so he could see better. As soon as the sun had risen, he had walked around the camp a few times, but saw no one but his own men. He knew three of his men were down, but he had not checked a single man since the fight had started. Actually, the old banker didn’t care personally how many of them died, as long as he survived. It saved him from killing them later, but he knew he still needed some men to get the gold.

Seeing old Johnson bent down stoking up the campfire, the fat banker walked over and asked, “How many men did we lose?”

Johnson gave a loud laugh and said, “Hell, we didn’t lose none. Sanderson got a big-assed chunk of meat blowed out of his neck from a Hawken, while Hanks and Wilcox both got nips, but that’s ‘bout all there was to ‘er. Now, Sanderson might up and die on us yet, but I don’t think that’s likely, less he festers up.”

“Who was it that attacked us? Ya fig’ered that out yet?”

“Lordy man, are ya a fool or just thinkin' like one? It had to be the ones yer followin’. Iffen it was Injuns we’d all be dead right now. Nope, it was them alright. I ‘spect they was after the hosses and Sanderson messed the plan up.”

“Hank, you get these men to eat, get loaded up and I wanna find these people. Time we put an end to these damned games of theirs and get the gold.”

The next hour was spent eating, bandaging the wounded, and packing the horses. Murdock knew he had been lucky. If Sanderson had not seen the young mountain man when he had, they would have lost all of the horses, again. The fat banker knew a horseless man in the mountains was the same as dead meat. So much for worryin’ ‘bout the horses. We still got ‘em, so now I want that gold, he thought as he mounted his horse. To his men he said, “Let’s go get ‘em, boys. I offer a five hundred dollar reward to the first man that spots their camp.” Not that any of you will live long enough to see a penny of it though, he laughed internally as he walked his horse up the narrow and rocky trail.

Less than an hour later the man in front of Murdock said, “I see a cave up on the side of that hill over there on the right. Some smoke a-comin’ out of ‘er, too!”

“Good man. I see their horses now. Let’s dismount, then we’ll move in closer on foot. Tie the horses over there on that oak limb. What’s yer name?”

“Hanks, I’m Bud Hanks.”

“Well, mister Bud Hanks, yer five hundred dollars richer as soon as we get the gold. Okay, now every one of them bastards we kill, ‘cept for the little woman.
