The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus, Fig. 8) is an atypical feline. What it is lacking

in muscular strength (and therefore in weight) it makes up for in speed. Its claws

are not retractable, and it chokes its prey at the end of a sprinting race. Its long

legs, its absence of a clavicle, and the great flexibility of its spinal column (this

animal can double over while running because its strictly carnivorous diet allows

it to have a very small abdomen) allow it to compete with gazelles in races over

short distances.
