Chapter 17

Thanksgiving was right around the corner, and while some restaurants were open, the Rib Shack wasn’t going to be—Julian, the owner, said it wasn’t called Turkey Day for nothing—people wanted a big bird not ribs or steak.

That meant April—Kyle’s girlfriend—had the day off.

And best of all, she’d called and invited him to have dinner at her townhouse.

“Come early so we can watch the Macy’s Parade while I have the turkey in the oven. We’ll eat dinner around two, then watch the Bears and the Cowboys while we have dessert.”

“Okay.” He wasn’t about to turn down an offer like that. His oven was barely large enough to hold a decent-sized chicken, let alone a turkey, while April’s kitchen was almost as big as his entire apartment. “What can I bring?”

“A bottle of Pinot Noir would be nice.”

“I know of a good California brand. I’ll see if I can find a liquor store that carries it. What else?”

“We’ll need dessert.” She gave him a sweet smile. “Your choice, since I chose the wine.”

Kyle felt his insides flip. It had been a long time since Julie, but he didn’t remember it being like this. Was this what falling in love as an adult felt like?

“There’s a little bakery near here, and they make the most amazing French apple pie. It’s got a crumbly crust, not one of those regular pie crusts, and it’s buttery and cinnamon-y and I think you’ll love it.”

“I know I will.” Her smile was obvious even over the phone.

He couldn’t wait until Thanksgiving arrived.

Thanksgiving wasn’t the first time he’d been in April’s townhouse—in early October she’d invited him over to help him wrap the gift for boss number three’s baby—but it was the first time they’d been spending more than a couple of hours alone in it. Bella had taken her boyfriend home to meet her family, while Nick and Tom were spending the weekend in New York City with their girlfriends. They planned to see the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, go skating at Rockefeller Center, and then eat cheesecake at Junior’s.

“How long have Bella and her boyfriend—”

“Alex,” she clarified.

“Uh…yeah. How long have they been together?

“About a year.”

“And she’s just now bringing him to meet her family?”

“Yes.”

“Oh.” A year. And he and April had been dating for four months. “Okay.” No way was he going to suggest April introduce him to her family. Not yet, anyway

Maybe someday April would go to the city with him, and they could do everything Tom and Nick and their girlfriends were doing.

Maybe someday she’d take him home to meet her family.

They cooked—well, April cooked. Kyle helped in every way he could, setting the table and peeling and cutting up the potatoes to be boiled before they mashed them later.

“I hope you won’t be disappointed.”

“You could never disappoint me.”

She looked uncertain.

“Okay, explain why you think I’d be disappointed?”

“Well…the turkey and the mashed potatoes are the only things I’ll be making from scratch. Everything else is from a box or a can, or from the mom-and-pop deli over on M Street.
