There wasn’t a single black dress hanging in Samantha’s closet. Ten years ago, she resolved not to hide her light, and that included dressing to merely blend in. She’d decided that the world didn’t have to like her, but they wouldn’t be able to ignore her.

She’d been bullied and made fun of throughout school for being dyslexic. She grew up in a small town just north of Port Provident, on the mainland. The schools there were poor, and anything beyond the most basic of state requirements to help kids overcome disabilities was not in the budget. Everyone in situations like hers got sent to special education classes—and outside of the classroom doors, their peers brutally labeled them.

Not a day went by where Samantha wasn’t called stupid or fat or ugly or any one of a hundred other taunts. Not a day went by where she wasn’t turned away by some group or another at various lunch tables. No one wanted to be friends with a girl who was different, who struggled with the most basic principles of reading. She started to wear dark colors, just so she didn’t stand out, and she hoped no one would notice her—or her disability.

The one thing no one had counted on was that underneath the superficial layers others saw, Samantha Spaeth was a fighter. The minute she shook off the dust of Montmorency, Texas, she enrolled for one class at Provident College. She took one class a semester at first and then found the help she needed. Through tutors and determination, Samantha earned her degree and found a job at the Port Provident Historical Society.

The day she walked across the stage in her black graduation robes was the day Samantha decided she was never wearing black again.

She would shine, and no one would stop her.

Well, at least not until God called her home, like He’d done for Kaye Vontegarten three days ago. She didn’t know Kaye well, but had seen her singing in the choir loft at First Provident Church over the years.

But she had come to know Kaye’s grandson, and she knew he’d be there at today’s small funeral. Samantha also knew he’d be alone.

She quit looking through her closet for something she knew wasn’t there. She grabbed a bright Christmas plaid dress and put it on.

It was the night before Christmas Eve—and besides, a woman who sang her heart out in a choir loft every Sunday for decades probably knew a thing or two about how to shine. Samantha felt certain that Miss Kaye would approve.

Samantha stopped in front of the full-length mirror and gave a little twirl, watching the flare of the skirt.

Her mouth curved up at the corners, and the woman who’d resolved to sparkle found herself hoping that Miss Kaye’s grandson would approve too.
