But it works for the Best Westerns. One gets the sense from listening to their LP that six more weeks of working with the songs might have tightened the seams but would not have improved the way the sound fits so cunningly together. As it is, the Best Westerns have a sound entirely unique and compelling: the rough gloss and looseness of the rhythm section provides the perfect background for Opatz’s singing and Martens’s soaring steel. Odd segments of banjo in the mix lend a quirky touch that hints at the old-time sound without pushing the whole thing too far down the hipster slope. It’s incredibly difficult for any band to pool their talents and generate a collective sound that listeners won’t immediately identify as somehow “derivative,” but the Best Westerns have done it—and what’s more, they’ve done it in a casual, almost offhand way, a pleasant reminder to anyone who slaps the LP on their turntable that the main point of making music is always to have fun.
