CHAPTER 20

THE WAREHOUSE

Val

I woke with a start, to an eerie lost chaos with an angel’s bones cracking as she was dragged across a floor. A slimy snail trail of bone fragments and scattered, luminous feathers that were white enough to eat the sun. Feathers, screams, and chains. A glutinous gargle as the Nightmare King fucked her with evil glee, with her tongue nailed to…something.

I woke again in the pickup to see Zara driving.

“Jesus.” I swiped my hand down my face.

We were on the way to the Detroit warehouse. A street sign whisked by, showing we were almost there.

Two hundred miles back, we’d sat down with Harrow and Co at a park bench and table and talked through my idea.

After what had just happened, after Bene was taken, agreement had come rapidly. Even Harrow had nodded somberly. The full history of fighting the Nightmare King hadn’t been known to them, but Zara could remember a past when vast forces had been arrayed against him, and arcane weapons used. She’d given them a summary of the battle where the musket ball was fired into his guts. It had been an ugly battle, and the same one where that angel had died. The King hadn’t won, but he hadn’t lost either. He’d lain dormant for more than a hundred years.

He’d ended up haunting me.

With their agreement, I’d contacted Luke. There was no easy, simple, and safe system to do this. I knew Luke well. We were friends or we had been.

I sent him a text, using the number I’d remembered and identifying myself. It was possible he no longer used the number. It was possible he would look up my name and see a string of offences recorded. They might have pinned the murders in Mexico on me. The news hadn’t given a name, but that didn’t mean they didn’t know who had killed seven cartel members…and a couple of others.
