CHAPTER 13: Rich

In the blink of an eye, Alex disappeared from his mother’s realty store and reappeared in a puff of black smoke. He found himself near the alley. The stench of rotting garbage and wet cardboard clung to his nose.

He turned his head around to find his family shop in the distance. Alex sighed while looking at it. He turned into the alley and walked. With no one around, Be-Gone appeared on his left hand and eyed his gloomy host.

“Are you okay, Bookworm?” Be-Gone asked with a sympathetic tone.

“I hurt my mom.” He slammed his fist on the alley wall. “I’m a terrible son.”

“Maybe.” The left-hand monster nodded.

“On Tuesday night, I told her I wished she’d died instead of Grandpa.” He smacked himself in the face. “I didn’t mean it. I was just so angry at her with Grandpa’s death, the move and the picture.” His cheeks were burning. “I’m such an idiot.”

“I am aware of how much you love her. You can always say you are sorry. When you are sad, it’s comforting to know that your parents are there for you. They will rid you of such sadness. A hug from your mother is a billion times better than therapy. Or so I’ve heard from your memories.”

His symbiont surprised Alex. The boy’s frown transformed into a smile. He coughed a single laugh and a giggle followed and it changed into laughter. His laugh was so loud and hard he could barely stand up, so he held himself against a wall. Be-Gone looked at him weirdly.

“What’s so funny?” the monster hand questioned.

“I never thought you’d be the one who would make me feel better.”

“I told you,” the monster added. “Your moods affect me and the more we bond the closer you get to control my powers, like you did just now.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, how do you explain why we are in the alley?”

Alex gasped. “Hey, I teleported. I did that and not you. I can do teleportation!”

“I told you that you can use my powers. See how good we are, working together?”

“Yeah, well.” The boy host went back to frowning. “I guess I can trust you a little, but you might still try something. So for now, beat it!” Alex shook his left-hand monster.

“BLALALALALALALALALALA!” Making blubbery noises as he shook, the monster disappeared and the host’s hand was back to normal. A hinting satisfaction came from Alex’s action and he couldn’t help but smile. With his hand returned to normal again, he continued down the alley.

“Speaking of trust,” Alex whispered to himself and walked deeper into the alley.

When he met with his younger cousin, Jay was sitting in the dirt with his back against the wall. Next to him were their bikes, one red and one blue. Jay frowned with his arms crossed. He was too angry to turn in Alex’s direction.

“Jay.” The older cousin spoke softly. “Have you cooled off yet?” The young cousin didn’t say a word. His older cousin knew what he felt after what happened back at the factory.
