put her cheek to the door and pressed it there and rolled her face over the molding then jerked herself back.

She'd taken it hard—the discovery of her faults. Death was never far from her mind. One evening, Mum asked her to promise she wouldn't commit suicide until she was eighteen. "I think you'll outgrow it by then," she explained, casually doing her needlepoint in front of the TV.

But the dissatisfaction persisted. Sometimes it felt like a craving and when Duer was there she kissed and kissed, trying to kiss it away, to kiss herself into some calmness, or peace of mind.

She couldn't stay in this dark room all night, she'd better go back down. The hall was blazing. At the top of the stairs some girls were peering closely at the framed Christmas cards. "God, you guys must have had a blast growing up," said one, seeing Sophie. Sophie returned her smile weakly. Going down the stairs, Sophie met Delilah coming up.

"You seen Sherman?" Delilah asked.

Sophie hadn't. "I shudder to think," she said. Sherman, only twelve, already had a taste for pot.

They stood and watched with similar expressions of concern the clusters of people in the usually deserted hall. At the bar people pressed limes inside plastic glasses, making gin-and-tonics, pros at it. A
