Thirty-One

International Space Station, December 24, 6:00pm EST

“What the hell?” Tavis yelled.

Joey spun slowly away from the cupola windows and her beautiful view of Earth to look up into the Tranquility module.

“You okay, Tav?” she called up into the station.

She didn’t know where he was, but it sounded far. The Russian modules? Pasha really needed to stop punking him. She had begun to spin back toward her laptop and the view when he yelled again.

“Joey! Something’s wrong out there! Where are you?”

“Cupola!” she yelled back. “What’s up?”

His face appeared above her as she spun back again. “Was in Zvezda and saw a bright flash through one of the upper windows. Don’t think it was near. Didn’t see the actual point of the flash,” he explained, voice raised, which was out of character.

Most of the windows in the station faced downward toward Earth. Only a few, like in the Russian modules, faced away from Earth.

Joey’s eyes squinted in concentration. She re-checked her view. “I didn’t see anything, but I probably wouldn’t have. I’m oriented toward the planet. We’re between the Sun and Earth, so a flash above us would be difficult to see from here. What direction did it come from?”

“It seemed as if it came from—”

The station lurched violently as if hit by something. They were both stationary, floating, when it happened. As the station moved, they were slammed into the module’s ceiling. Tavis hit the top of the Tranquility module with the flat of his back, but Joey was facing him. Her head and torso were shot up through the hatch from the cupola to Tranquility, but her legs were floating at an angle to her torso. Her right shin hit the side of the hatch with a crunch. She screamed in pain.

Tavis pulled her up into Tranquility, her laptop coming up with her, screen smashed. “Joey! Are you okay?”

“No, I don’t think… my leg hit the thing.”

Joey reached down, touching the side of her right lower leg. It wasn’t… right. She looked at Tav, who was now looking at her leg. The pain was terrible. She was light-headed.

“Joey. Joey!” he yelled in her face. He snapped his fingers in front of her eyes.

The pain was excruciating. She made a low growl and focused on his face. Red hair. Red beard with some gray. Blue eyes.

“Commander Washington!”

“Okay! I’m here! Leg?”

“Broken. Pasha!” he bellowed.

The sound of it wasn’t something she’d heard before from him. She looked down at her leg, and it surely wasn’t right. Her foot and half of her lower leg were at a slight angle to the rest of her leg. Shit!

She didn’t hear the Russian respond before she blacked out completely.
