CHAPTER EIGHT

“HOW MUCH FARTHER to the vet?” Adam asked.

“Not far. How’s Nitro? He seems awfully quiet.” Molly slanted an anxious look at the dog.

“He’s licking my hand. I triple folded the sleeve of my shirt over his wound. Maybe the extra pressure has staunched the pain and blood flow. Who would’ve thought he’d leap at an ATV?”

“He’s a guard dog. He went after the driver.”

“Unfortunately the back fender caught him when the jerk wheeled around so fast. Do you know what time it is?”

Molly checked the dash clock. “Around ten.”

“Will your vet be in his office this late?”

“Harlan Talbot lives behind his clinic. At night you push a buzzer by the clinic door. It rings in his house. If he’s out he posts a phone number of a vet on call.”

She glanced over at Adam, who was staring down at Nitro.

“There’s his clinic. The lights are all on and there’s a car out front. Maybe he’s got another emergency.”

Molly pulled in next to a Buick that had a large, open animal kennel in the backseat.

“He might be treating another big dog,” she said distractedly. “Wait, Adam. I’ll come around and open your door so you don’t have to jostle Nitro too much.”

Nodding, he murmured to the dog. After Molly opened the door and he stepped to the ground, Nitro buried his head in the crook of Adam’s arm.

“He comes here for shots,” Molly explained. “And I brought him here for neutering. Nitro’s not fond of this clinic or Dr. Talbot.” She tried the front door and found it unlocked. She shoved it open, setting off a loud chime.

“Have a seat. I’ll be with you as quick as I can,” called a disembodied voice from down a well-lit hall. Farther away dogs barked, interspersed with a few yowling cats.

Nitro began to whimper.

Adam sat in one of the plastic chairs and Molly eventually stopped pacing and dropped down on a bench. She leaned over to kiss Nitro between his ears, but realized belatedly that the move put her nose an inch away from Adam’s bare chest. So she stood fast again. “You’ve totally ruined your shirt. I have a jacket in the car, but it’ll be too small for you.”

“No fret, Molly.”

“Well, you can’t ride home on your motorcycle without a shirt. When we get back to the ranch I’m sure there are still T-shirts that belonged to my dad that will fit you. Nitro will be okay, won’t he?” she asked, switching subjects.

“I hope so. I’m more worried about having left your place without anyone around. What if that idiot returns while we’re gone? Should you call the police? Or ask Henry to go over there? Just to have someone on hand?”

“Do you think the ATVer will go back? At Henry’s age he’d be no match. I can’t in good conscience ask that of him, Adam. And what can cops do without us there?”

“Nothing I guess.”

The vet emerged from the examining room. “Molly, hello. What’s the problem?”

Molly whirled to face him.
