[ FAMILY BACKGROUND ]

SUSHIL’S FATHER, LALA CHIRANJI LAL, WAS BORN (1906) AND raised in his ancestral village Khama in Tehsil Nawan Shehar, Jallandhar district of Punjab. Grandfather Hansraj was a sugarcane farmer. His mother Suraj Kumari hailed from Rajpur village in Hoshiarpur district of the state.

Chiranji Lal had studied in the village school till matriculation. Though he wanted to continue his studies, a bout of malaria prevented him from pursuing higher education. The educational institution that he founded along with a partner after quitting his railway job gradually grew to become a middle school.

Differences between him and his partner led him to quit this venture and join another friend, Saran, an established contractor of Delhi. His company, Syndicate Contractors Private Ltd, was listed with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) as a first-class contractor and had executed several government contracts.

Impressed by Chiranji Lal’s loyalty and dedication, Saran initially gave him 5 per cent share in the company’s profits and later hiked it to 25-30 per cent. Chiranji Lal stayed on to work with him for nearly 10-12 years.

Somewhere along the line, he had begun to entertain the idea of striking out on his own. once he was sure of his ground, he formed C Lyal (anglicized version of his second name ‘Lal’) and Company and got it registered as a contracting company. Beginning with small contracts, he was able to get the company enlisted as a first-class contractor in CPWD and railways.

With the help of his connections in the railways, he managed to bag three contracts in quick succession. one of these was the construction of a part of the Baroda House, the headquarters of Northern Railways. He also built a few government quarters in Lodhi Colony and then did some government construction works on Pandara Road.

Thereafter he got himself listed as a Military Engineering Services (MES) contractor and undertook several projects for the army. one of his prestigious projects was building a part of the Delhi Cantonment and a military workshop in Babina, Madhya Pradesh.

His success in his own business venture earned him the sobriquet of Lalaji. A philanthropist, he founded a mission called Human Welfare Mission, which conducted adult literacy classes, free medical dispensary and a free library.

He was also keenly interested in politics. His close friend and mentor in politics was the former prime minister, IK Gujral, who enrolled him into the Congress Party. Due to his humble background and spotless track record, he was given the opportunity to contest elections as a member of the Electoral College. Back then the Electoral College was a prestigious body, which elected members to the Rajya Sabha.

Says Sushil about his father: ‘He took up contracting business only when he fell short of money. He never amassed wealth for the sake of it. His idea was to live well and earn enough so that he could help reduce the sufferings of other people in whatever way he could.’

He allowed many relatives back in the villages to join him as partners or gave them jobs in his company.
