Chapter Nine

Without thinking, I responded, “Ram wanted to spare you, not me. He still thinks you can provide information.”

“But you don’t?” His calculating gaze bore through me.

“I doubt it.” I shrugged. “I don’t know, sometimes you go off on a bad guy monologue. Guess he’s hoping you’ll reveal something then.”

“No.”

“No?”

His focus changed to his fingers in front of him. “I’m not buying it. Since when do you care about what some guy thinks? That’s not the Kate I know.”

“Pfft. There is no Kate you know.” I took a sip of my water. “You don’t know shit about me.”

A grin formed on his gaunt face. “I know you’re too independent to let others make decisions for you.”

The logical part of my brain knew he was trying to get under my skin. But it was a valid point. There was a big part of me that wanted to kill him. And I could do it so easily. One thought and poof. “Maybe it’s simply because I’m one of the good guys.”

“Are you, though?” An insincere smile formed on his face. “Seems to me that you fit the mold of a villain much more.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Though I kept my intonation to mildly bored, he was starting to piss me off.

“Well let’s consider it. You killed one man, put another one in a coma, and that’s just for starters. You’ve injured dozens of my men and killed a handful. You curse incessantly, have sex with multiple partners—”

I narrowed my eyes at him, and without even trying, my powers kicked in. I wanted to cause him pain, if only to get him to shut the fuck up.

He cried out as his nose began to bleed.

I sighed as I withdrew from his mind. He goaded me, and I totally fell for it.

“You’re proving my point, my dear.” That wicked grin returned. “You really enjoy using your powers, don’t you? Enjoy…hurting people.”

I hated that he was right. That he knew that part of me I kept hidden from the others. It wasn’t that I was a sadist—I would never hurt an innocent person. But fuckfaces like Derek? It was downright pleasurable frying their brains.

“And that’s why you’re a villain.” The grin became superior. Intolerable. Like he was begging me to punch it off his snide little face.

“Yet another douchebag male trying to tell me who I am…” I muttered. “What makes you think I care about your opinion at all? You’re the epitome of everything that’s wrong with men.”

“Oh, I forgot! Totally self-absorbed too.” He casually picked at his nails. “Definitely a villain quality.”

My heart began to pound. “Just where the fuck do you get off—”

“Don’t even try to argue that. You knew the ability to shapeshift existed, I gave you that as a freebie with that text I sent, after you thought you killed me. Only someone completely self-absorbed wouldn’t notice the love of their life acting like…well, like me.”

I closed my eyes, feeling my temperature rising. Of course he brought that up.
