ARTHUR LEANED AGAINST the open doorway and took a moment to just look at his partner. Syler was absorbed in a file, oscillating between his laptop and the papers, occasionally stopping to mutter a curse at one or both of them as his fingers carded through the pages. His head was resting heavily in the palm of his hand, glasses slipping down his nose as he read.

The scene could be from any office in the world, but only if one ignored the half dozen prototype rifles strewn across his desk. No, he had to admit, Syler wasn’t a random civilian. He was a Deputy and Arthur needed to stop treating him otherwise. He wasn’t anything like the men who’d walked away from Arthur before and it was a disservice to them both that he’d thought otherwise for even a second.

He knocked lightly on the frame. Syler’s head shot up with a jolt. He blinked at him owlishly, reaching up to readjust his glasses. “Since when do you knock, Arthur?”

“Only way I can get your attention some nights,” he replied. “It’s seven. Let’s get out of here.”

“Alright, but first just let me—”

“Francesca is expecting us at the bar tonight.”

Syler’s mouth dropped open in a silent ‘ah.’ For whatever reason, he'd never been willing to risk her ire. He nodded and set the file aside, gathering up the rifles and returning them to the lockbox tucked between two of his bookshelves. With one last glance around the room, he slipped into his jacket and slung his bag over his shoulder. “Shall we then?”

“I think we shall, but first—” Arthur shut the door and made his way over. He dropped his hands around Syler’s waist and pulled him in for a long, slow kiss. He pressed their foreheads together when he pulled back and murmured, “I missed you.”

He felt Syler’s amused grin against his jaw. “It’s only been eight hours, you ridiculous man.”

“Still missed you,” he repeated, nuzzling against the side of his neck. “Also, there’s a thing I need to tell you about later.”

Syler frowned. “A thing?”

“Mhm, so don’t let me forget.” He drew back and extended an arm to Syler. “Now, shall we?”

“You’re so odd,” Syler chuckled and shook his head at him. He slipped underneath his arm, lips ghosting over the shell of his ear. “It’s probably for the best that I like you this way.”
