Chapter 13
September 15, 1815
Darcy woke late, later, perhaps, than he had ever done, so late he had some concern over everyone in the house wondering what had prompted his absence. After having achieved his every desire last night, he had felt so relieved and so sated that sleep had seemed to wish to seize him and drag him down into its depths, particularly after Elizabeth had fallen asleep upon his shoulder. It had been the greatest temptation to remain in the room with her, to sleep with her in that manner, and he had been required to summon a great deal of self-command in order to slip out from beneath her, to cover her and dress himself.
To his great relief, he had not encountered anyone in the hallway, for he did not know how he would have explained his dishevelled appearance, that he was carrying his thoroughly soiled shirt, with his cravat wrapped around his neck and tucked into his waistcoat as a poor substitute. Aching with exhaustion, he did not think he had remained awake for a full minute, once he had finally climbed into his own bed, and in that time, he could only think that he had succeeded, that she had agreed to marry him, and in such a manner as to make him have no concerns in this morningâs light that she would change her mind.
The morning sun had heated the room, and Darcy threw off his bedcovers, but made no further move to rise. Although he should have begun his already-late day, he could not bring himself to do so: there were far too many things he wished to recollect in privacy, so many memories of that wonderful, wonderful night.
It was not gentlemanly to speak of marital relations with oneâs wife, but genteel behaviour diminished with enough drink, and Darcy had heard rather numerous tales of frigid wives, both at Whiteâs and around dining tables, once the ladies had departed. Before last night, he had not been entirely sure whether all of Elizabethâs reluctance was due to Collinsâs ineptitude or indifference, or whether there was some natural frigidity to her. It had seemed very unlike Elizabethâs personality to be so, however, and he had hoped for a better response from her, once presented with a more loving partner. Now, he could not help but wonder if most of those frigid wives were indeed the fault of their husbands.
How wonderfully she had responded to him! He had read so much, but feared his lack of actual practise would expose him as incompetent and awkward, but both the things he had planned to do and those he had found himself desiring to do, in the sensations of the moment, had all evoked such beautiful reactions from her. How delightful it had been, to bring her such pleasure, and when he had slipped his finger inside her and felt how tremendously wet she was, he had thought then that all could come right of their union. He had
