ITâS BECAUSE YOUâRE you. Elaineâs words kept rolling through my mind on repeat, and I wished I could believe them. But so did other words that had once come from her lips, and they were much louder and more insistent. How could you? I kept waiting for you to call so Dillon and I could tell you happy birthday, but you were too busy with some puck bunny slut to bother with your wife and son.
In twenty years, Iâd never been able to get those words out of my head. I might be able to push them aside briefly, but they always came back to haunt me.
Iâd been on the road with a new team after being traded at the deadline. Elaine and Dillon had stayed behind in Hartford, since she hadnât been able to pack up everything and come with me at the drop of a hat. I hadnât seen her or my son in weeks, I didnât know or like my new teammates yet, and I was lonely. Insanely lonely. So instead of doing the smart thing and going back to my hotel room to call them, Iâd ended up at a bar on my birthday, and Iâd had way too much to drink, and Iâd made the biggest mistake of my life.
Admitting it as soon as possible didnât absolve me from what Iâd done. Nothing could erase the past.
Since Elaine had already been busy packing up our entire house, it had been easy enough for her to put it all in a moving truck headed back to her hometown in Minnesota instead of going all the way across the country to join me in LA.
And that had been that.
Iâd screwed up, so I had to be a man and accept the consequences. Those consequences werenât supposed to include my ex-wife standing in front of me two decades later and asking for another chance.
The noise around us seemed to press in even though we were still well away from the crowd. Elaine folded her arms in front of her, tucking the mistletoe away and holding herself as if a chill had taken hold of her. It wouldnât be a surprise. Sheâd always gotten cold easily, and they kept it nice and cool in the arena for our games. So many nights, sheâd burrowed up against me, trying to absorb as much of my warmth as she could. Out of instinct, I took off my suit jacket and put it around her shoulders.
âThank you,â she said.
âWe shouldâ¦â We shouldnât be doing this. âCan we go somewhere and talk?â
I wasnât sure where that had come from, but she was here. It seemed like the least I could do after sheâd made this kind of effort.
âHow about a coffee?â
âI can do coffee. Letâs go get your purse.â
She made a face.
âWhat?â
âI havenât checked into my hotel yet. My bags are still in Lauraâs SUV. She was going to take me. I donât wantââ
âLetâs get your bags, then. Iâll make sure you get to your hotel safe.
