CHAPTER ELEVEN
Lisa had a doctorâs appointment. Dwight accompanied her. Perhaps it was naïve of him to believe she would let go of him easily but even if she was determined to be difficult, he couldnât help but support her in this time of need. After her weekly check-up, he drove her back home.
âThanks, Dwight.â
âNo problem,â he muttered as he held the door open, so she could step out. âIâm glad all is well.â
âYeah.â She stared into his eyes.
He didnât quite meet her gaze. They didnât have much to say to each other and there wasnât any point repeating the old stuff.
âIâm sorry that youâve been dragged into this.â
Yeah. This should have been done by the jerk who fathered your baby!
Dwight wouldnât say this aloud, though.
Sheâs pregnant and emotional and he didnât want to intensify her worry. Lisa could be self-absorbed and even selfish to a degree, but she had a kind heart. In all the years they were married, she never intentionally caused him any hurtâuntil now
âIâm going out,â he declared.
A look of disappointment reflected in her eyes.
Dwight recognized her mood all too well. If he stayed in the house, they would end up discussing the same thing that was hashed and rehashed a hundred times since he came home.
She wanted him back.
He wanted out of the marriage.
Lisa brought this on herself. He wouldâve been a good husband if she hadnât betrayed him. Now, he was only determined to be a good friend. Sooner or later, she would have to accept what he offered and get everything else off the table.
After she walked inside, he backed the car out again and drove off. Actually, he didnât have any plans. All he wanted was to get away for a while and forget about the problems heâd become mired in. Without really meaning to or with any conscious intention, he ended up outside Kerrieâs house.
Dwight parked the car and debated his next move. His heart wouldnât allow him to move away. After getting out of the car, he locked it and then strode towards the main door. He rang the bell.
Kerrie opened it. A line of grease ran over her right cheek and she held a bottle of oven cleaner in one hand. Her eyes widened.
He enjoyed seeing the play of emotions on her face. Pleasure followed closely by caution. âHi. I was cleaning the oven.â
âYeah. I can see that.â He reached with his hand and wiped the grease from her face. Her smooth, velvety skin felt cool to the touch. An electric current zinged up his arm at the brief contact. âThatâs better.â
Her tongue darted out to touch her lips. âThanks.â
Seeing that she didnât move, he shifted on his feet. âMay I come inside?â
She glanced back as if she expected the police to come striding in and arrest her for letting him in. âActually, Jayden just went to bed. Heâs reading a book, but I donât want him to...â
He understood her dilemma and didnât want to add to it, but he needed to see her, talk to her for a bit to clear his own mind.
