It took her breath away. That was the only way Danni could explain being on the back of a Ski-Doo as it sped through the wilds of Alaska. She expected to be colder, but her winter wear was surprisingly good at minimizing the chill. The face mask, thick goggles and the fur-lined hood of her parka kept the snow off her face.
But nothing could compare to the way the landscape stretched out to the horizon on one side and the pure white snow with an icy tree line skirted the shoreline. They were on the river. Declan called it out to her, and she felt the change from snow-covered ground to pure ice with at least a foot of snow covering it. The bumps became one smooth ride, and Danni lifted her head to see white bunnies run from the sound of the snowmobile.
The laugh that escaped her caught and rushed away on the wind. This was the only place she could see wildlife up close. Little white birds took flight, and for a moment the snowmobile kept up with a small pack of caribou crossing the river. The towns came into view, and she could see the complete difference between their homes and the ones in Juneau, and well, anywhere in the world. The simple houses were made into duplexes or left as single-family dwellings. Almost everything was covered in ice, there were no streets signs or roads from what she could tell.
She was getting accustomed to the fact that Main Street in Auke Bay and some other streets were plowed, but that wasnât the case with these towns. Did they even have a main street? Very few decorations were outside, and Danni could tell the people lived simply. The community center was half the size of the one in Auke Bay. When they parked, Danni looked at the beige siding with three steps that led to a small patio area. Declan helped her off the snowmobile before he brought his leg over and stood stiffly stretching his back. He pulled down his own face covering and took a deep breath.
âAre you okay, in pain?â asked Danni, her voice full of concern.
âIâm good. Getting rid of the kinks from sitting in one position for two hours.â Declan looked at her. âHow did you like the first trip out of Auke?â
âIt was exhilarating. Did you see the bunnies and the birds? Oh my God, and we were right next to the caribou, like we were a part of the herd.â
âDid you know that caribou is what everyone calls reindeer,â Declan said casually as they took the tarp off the boxes that were strapped down. âThose little birds are called Ptarmigan and sometimes you canât tell them from the snow. But itâs a staple of eating here in the winter.â
âYou are kidding. I was close to reindeer!â She clapped her hands in delight.
âNone had a red nose, unfortunately. He lives with Santa farther north,â he teased.
Danni grinned as she took a box and walked up the small steps.
