Maven

Maven had no idea that Brandon had lied to her and snuck out. She was planning his death when she found that the shower was empty, but she’d have to find him first. In order to do that, she was going to have to call in some backup. She just hated doing that on Christmas morning when most of the guys on the team had kids.

She broke down and called Mason, knowing that he’d be able to get the team together back in the states. She was sure that her call was going to go to voicemail when Brandon answered.

“Maven,” he said. “Tell me that you’re calling me to wish us a Merry Christmas.”

“I wish that I was,” Maven said. “Brandon is missing, and Blade is with him. They left last evening, according to Yonkers, and they haven’t come back.”

“Where the hell did he go?” Mason asked.

“Brandon wanted to go to town to get me a Christmas present,” Maven said. She had to drag that piece of information out of Yonkers, but she got it.

“Son-of-a-bitch,” Mason cursed.

“Yeah, that’s exactly how I feel,” Maven said. “I’m not sure what’s happened, but I suspect that the Ghosts have him.”

“Okay, I’ll get the team ready to head out, but with the holiday, it’s going to take us a few extra hours to get the plane ready. Can you hold down the fort until we get there?” he asked. She was about to tell him that she wasn’t sure she could hold down anything waiting on the team to get to them in the Bahamas when Blade came barreling through the front door. And when Brandon appeared behind him, she nearly hit her knees.

“He’s here,” she sobbed into the phone.

“Give me to Brandon, Maven,” Mason ordered. She crossed the room and handed Brandon the phone, letting him pull her into his arms. Every thought she had about being angry with him disappeared at that moment; she was so happy to see him. He put the call on speaker so that she could listen in.

“It’s Mason,” she whispered.

“Hey, man,” Brandon said.

“What the hell is going on?” Mason asked.

“It’s a long story, but I’ll give you the abbreviated one until we get home in the next day or two,” Brandon said. “Blade and I were taken by the Ghosts—Spider to be precise.”

“So, he’s alive and working for the Ghosts then?” Mason interrupted.

“Yes, and no,” Brandon said, “he’s alive but he’s not working for the Ghosts. He’s CIA and under deep cover.”

“Why the hell wouldn’t we have been informed about this? When our two agencies work the same case, we usually fill the other in,” Maven said.

“I know, but he was under orders not to tell anyone about his involvement. The Ghosts vetted him by telling him that they needed him to literally become a ghost for them. They planned the whole thing to make everyone believe that he was dead. That way, he could slip in and out of places undetected. He went along with it to prove his loyalty to the Ghosts and keep his cover.
