main deck. There, he and his comrades, all of them carrying rifles, settled down to wait, and at Tommie's instigation they were served sandwiches instead of going indoors for supper.

By the time they finished eating, Edward counted at least seventy-five mounted braves only a hundred yards from the shore and saw that the number was still increasing. Concealing himself as best he could from the sight of those on land, he went down to confer with Isaiah Harding in the prow of the ship.

"It looks as though we have no choice in the matter and must start the battle for the sake of our own self-interest," he said.

"I reckon you're right," Captain Harding said, sighing unhappily. "It goes against the grain to start a fight with the savages, but I don't think they're giving us much choice. If we postpone action much longer, we run the risk of being overwhelmed.''

"We're ready to move right now," Edward told him.

The older man shook his head. "No," he said, "I think we'll be wise to wait until after nightfall. The operation that we've planned will be most effective after dark."

Edward rejoined his comrades. He was grim and silent, and he found that they were also far from talkative as they waited for the action to begin. The tension mounted steadily.

The atmosphere was unexpectedly relieved by Tom-mie Harding, who showed a surprising talent for light banter that made her colleagues forget the imminence of battle. Edward was forced to admit to himself that,
