CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Cole
âMorning, Cole. Come on in and interrupt the one morning of the week we actually eat breakfast as a family.â
He eyed the flowers and box of donuts in my hand and rolled his eyes.
âSorry, Mr. Bennet. I can come back later if itâs a bad time?â
âAnd risk me having to survive the wrath of my daughter? No.â He rubbed his jaw. âYouâd better come in. Besides, Poppy beat you to it. She got here fifteen minutes ago. Have kids they said, itâll be fun they said,â he muttered to himself as he walked off down the hall.
I followed him, my heart kicking into overdrive when I heard Sofiaâs soft laughter.
After the Kacie-blip last night, Iâd wondered if she would withdraw again. Iâd seen the hesitation in her eyes, the sheer panic. So Iâd kissed her. Iâd pulled her into my arms and kissed her so hard she couldnât possibly doubt my intentions.
âSofia, you have a visitor,â Mr. Bennet said, walking into the kitchen ahead of me.
âWhat the fuâ hell, Kandon? Youâre going to turn up at my house with flowers and donuts when Iââ
âBabe.â Poppy stamped on his foot under the table and Aaron cussed under his breath.
âI brought enough for everyone.â I offered the box to Mrs. Bennet.
âThatâs very kind of you, Cole. Take a seat, the bacon is almost done.â
Sofia patted the chair next to her.
âThis is an unexpected surprise,â she whispered as I sat down, trying to ignore the daggers Aaron was throwing me.
âI thought Iâd surprise you.â
âOh, it was a surprise all right.â Mr. Bennet snorted.
âDad,â Sofia murmured.
âOne day, sweetheart, when youâre much, much older and you have children of your own, you will understand.â He patted her hand.
âI think itâs very sweet, Cole. And youâre always more than welcome to have breakfast with us.â
âThanks, Mrs. B. It looks great.â
And it beat being stuck at home with Mom and Dad and the prickly atmosphere that followed him like a bad smell.
The second Iâd come downstairs, and heâd tried to bring up the mixer next weekend, Iâd made my excuses and gotten the hell out of there.
As if Iâd summoned him from the depths of hell, my cell phone began ringing.
I dug it out of my pocket and hit reject.
âYour old man?â Aaron asked, and I nodded.
âIf you need to take itââ
âI donât. But thanks.â I gave Mrs. Bennet a weak smile. She knew a little about my dad. But she didnât know the full extent of things. No one did. Because when you were a Kandon, you kept your problems swept under the rug and you never aired your dirty laundry.
âThat was a big win Friday night,â Mr. Bennet said. âYou guys think you can go all the way?â
âDamn right we can.â Aaron grinned.
âI remember it like it was yesterday.â
âDidnât you sacrifice the playoffs, Dad?â Sofia asked.
âJust because I didnât play all the games, doesnât mean I donât remember what it was like.â
âYour father did a very commendable thing covering for Jase.â
âCoach Ford was a badass back in the day,â Aaron said.
