Chapter Twenty-Five
Sunday at home, I washed everyoneâs dirty laundry. The socks smelled of rotting feet. How could boys live with feet that stunk so badly? Were they immune to their own stink?
I was switching the clothes from the washer to the dryer, and gasped when Junior bumped into my rear. His callused hands held my hips to his front. His thumbs grazed my skin just above my jeans and below my slightly raised shirt. The bastard was back from being on the road for days. I knew what that meant for me. No sleep. Iâd be up most of the night waiting to fight him off.
âDid you miss me?â he asked as I flew up quickly.
I never responded.
Why would I miss a pathetic piece of shit?
I tried to move away. He only pressed me to the machine. âDid you miss me?â he said once more and growled.
âNo,â I hissed through gritted teeth.
âToo bad âcause I sure as hell missed you.â His breath smelled of beer and cigarettes, the usual foul scents, but something else also. Perfume?
I hated the ground this man walked on. If he died a slow painful death, it still wouldnât please me.
I bucked backward to escape. âJunior!â
He took that the wrong way and snarled into my hairline. âThatâs it.â
âLeave me alone!â I shouted in the small, closed room. When had he shut the damn door?
He clamped a hand over my mouth, muffling my screams. âStop screaming.â I took a deep breath in through my nose, then nodded. He released me with a warning. âDonât do that again,â he whisper-growled in my ear. âDo you know how much money that pussy of yours is worth? The cost to protect it untilâ¦â
I was shoved forward. My hipbones ached from the pang of colliding with the washer. What did he mean by âworthâ? âProtectingâ?
Suddenly the door swung open. I couldnât see who had come in, but I heard her. âWhat are yâall doing in here?â Ann asked with a rasp to her tone.
âShonnie smashed her hand. I was trying to see how badly,â he covered for himself.
âLet me look. The last thing we need is to bring one of them into the damn ER for a bone, goddammit. Canât you be careful?â Ann pulled my hand and studied it for a few seconds. âSheâs so damn clumsy, isnât she, Junior?â
I was in hell.
I sniffled, as Ann pressed her fingers between the joints in my hand, making it hurt. Junior was directly behind her, staring at me, daring me to tell his secret.
âIâm fine,â I mumble-choked. I hadnât smashed my damn hand. The bones of my hips were hurting not where the woman was examining.
She pivoted to face him. âIf she gets hurtâ¦â Ann paused.
Ann knew.
I dug the heels of my hands into my eyes, wiping away tears, then with the back of one, I wiped my nose.
âLeave Shonnie to her chores. Sheâll be at Henstonsâ tomorrow. She needs to get this done today.â She turned back to me. âClean your face, girl.
